ANDROID 12 WILL FACILITATE THE INSTALLATION AND USE OF THIRD-PARTY APP STORES, ACCORDING TO GOOGLE |
The Android platform, unlike iOS, allows users to obtain mobile applications from alternative application stores to the Google Play Store. In fact, in the customization layers of many mobile manufacturers, it is common to find other application stores available beyond the Play Store.
Even so, the official application stores of both mobile platforms are being accused of competitive practices following the movements of Epic, developer of Fornite, to try to integrate its own alternative payment system, trying to evade the 30% rate of purchases integrated, which is why your game has been removed from both, from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
Faced with this situation, and in response to this, Google has sought the opinion of some developers to try to change their policies for the next major version of Android, Android 12, which will be released over the next year.
On the one hand, it will make it easier for users to install and use alternative application stores, looking for a way to prevent the security of users' devices from being compromised, for which it undertakes to provide details in the future:
That being said, some developers have given us feedback on how we can improve the user experience by installing another app store on their device. In response to those comments, we will be making changes to Android 12 (next year's Android release) to make it even easier for people to use other app stores on their devices and to be careful not to compromise the security measures that Android has. implemented
… But the Google payment system will continue to be used in apps on Google Play
But on the other hand, it will continue to demand that applications that have integrated purchases continue to use Google's billing method in case they want to distribute them through the Play Store, allowing, yes, other application stores to have their own models business:
Each store can decide its own business model and characteristics for the consumer. This openness means that even if a developer and Google cannot agree on commercial terms, the developer can still distribute on the Android platform.
Google gives Fornite as an example, that although they are no longer in the Google Play Store, users can obtain it from alternative stores, where in fact they can also install the Fornite store on their own devices:
That's why Fortnite, for example, is available directly from the Epic store or other app stores, including Samsun's Galaxy app store.
Finally, and taking into account the pandemic situation due to the Covid-19 coronavirus, Google has indicated that those companies that have had to move their businesses from the physical to the digital sphere will not have to use the Google Play payment system for Android in the next 12 months, committing to reassess the situation over the next year.
