How to play online between PS4 and Xbox One. What you need to know before starting

Before I go into detail in this guide on How to Play Online Between PS4 and Xbox One, I think you might be interested in learning more about how the two consoles' online systems work and how they can "collaborate" with each other.

The famous PlayStation 4 (made by Sony) and the well-known Xbox One (made by Microsoft) implement particularly different online systems, which also take advantage of different infrastructures.

Sony's console does have a PlayStation Network, while Microsoft uses Xbox Live: this means that the two network structures are independent of each other and, for example, one could be disconnected while the other could continue to function.

However, over the years, gamers have repeatedly expressed their willingness to play with their friends who own a "rival console." For this reason, what is called in technical jargon " crossplay" was born. The latter can “connect” the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live to each other at the software level so that users can play together even if they have different hardware: therefore, it is a feature that manufacturers must allow and that they have implemented developers.

Depending on the case, a subscription to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold may be required to access cross-play (for games that take advantage of the infrastructure of these services and do not have dedicated servers, as is the case with some free titles). If you have not done so yet, I invite you to take a look at my guides on how to play online on PS4 and how to play online on Xbox One, in which I explained in detail the operation of the Sony and Microsoft online platforms.

How to know if a game is a crossplay

The crossplay also called multiplatform game is very popular among the community, but also quite difficult to implement in a game. In fact, the problems that can arise in the development phase are multiple: from the difference in terms of hardware "power" (just think of PS4 and Xbox One X) to the problems that can arise in the "connection" between the two different network infrastructures and possible "shutdowns" by hardware manufacturers.

For this reason, before you can play online with a friend who owns the other console, you need to understand whether your chosen title supports crossplay. Currently, there is unfortunately no label guaranteeing support for this functionality in a specific game, but it is still information that can be easily found online. My advice, therefore, is to just search online with terms like (game title) crossplay and dig into this aspect.

In any case, a distinguishing element to understand if a game supports crossplay or not is the presence of an account within the game, which is quite different from the classic profiles of PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. However, some games do not respect this rule and therefore, I encourage you not to provide this information for sure.

In addition to this, it is usually the most popular online multiplayer titles that support this feature. Just think of FortniteFearless, and Rocket League, all crossplay video games. For more information, I invite you to consult the list of crossplay games, compiled by DigitalTrends. But I remind you that the support for this feature depends on the game developers and therefore the list is not always updated.

After explaining if a game is a crossplay, I would say that you are ready to play online with your friends who have the "rival console" - below you will find all the appropriate instructions.

How to play online between PS4 and Xbox One in Fortnite

Fortnite is one of the titles that have been the “forerunners” of cross-play and, of course, it allows you to play online between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (and also other platforms for which the game is available).

The first thing to do is to make sure your console is connected to the Internet. To do this, I recommend that you follow my guide on how to access the PlayStation Network if you have a PlayStation 4 or my tutorial on how to connect to Xbox Live if you have an Xbox One.

After making sure the console is connected to the internet, you need to add your friends to Fortnite: to continue, launch the game and press the touchpad button (PS4) or the view button (the one with the two-window picture, on Xbox One).

At this point, press the square button (PS4) or the X button (Xbox One) on the controller and type your friend's name in the search bar. The game will automatically send a friend request.

Once your friend has accepted, simply press the X button (PS4) or the button the (Xbox One) of the controller above their name and select the Invite to party item - this way they can play Fortnite together.

If you really can't find your friend's account, there may be another reason. In fact, you may have decided, the first time you started the game, to create a temporary account for Fortnite and this may prevent you from finding your friend's profile.

If you want to remedy this situation, know that this is possible, but you may lose your progress. In case you still want to continue with this operation, connect to the official website of Epic Games and select the article LOGIN, present in the upper right corner. At this point, press the PlayStation icon (first from the left) or Xbox (second from the left), enter the email address and password related to the console account, and press the access button.

Now, the portal will explain how to transform your temporary account in Epic Games, which can be used to play even with people who do not have the same platform. Then enter the first namelast nameDisplay nameemail address, and password, check the box I have read and accept: terms of service and press the gray button CREATE ACCOUNT. For more details, I invite you to consult my tutorial on how to create an Epic Games account.

Great: now you have converted your temporary profile to an Epic Games account and you can finally play with your friends who come from other platforms. For more information, I recommend that you take a look at my guide on how to activate cross-platform in Fortnite.

Other games

You are not going to play Fortnite in cross-play but have chosen another game that supports this function and you do not know how to activate it? No problem, I will immediately explain how to do it.

As mentioned above, titles that support crossplay generally have an internal game account, which differs from PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. For this reason, the first thing you need to do is create an account for the game, by following the instructions that appear on the screen at the beginning or by searching for its official website online.

After executing the login with the newly created account, look inside the title for the functionality to add friends, inserting the relative nicknames, and sending them friend requestsAt this point, your friend will just have to accept the request and invite you to a game with him.

This is usually the standard procedure used by crossover games, but of course, there may also be titles that directly implement the ability to play with users from other platforms, without having to go through an in-game account.

So far everything for today. I cannot be more precise with my instructions, but in general, I can assure you that the procedures to follow to play between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are very simple to implement. Cheer up.
